Expected Results

The main outcome of the project will be the development of an electronic blockchain platform for full traceability and quality assurance for consumer-focused ready meals, whose components will be the quality assurance protocol and the full traceability scheme. The combined implementation of these components will be supported through a set of online applications that will be accessible not only to the production company (AMALTHIA) but also to the other parties in the relevant supply chain (producers, agronomists, buyers, processors, retailers and consumers).

The individual modules-digits of the electronic blockchain platform are as follows:

  • Implementation of the Primary Production Tract: Detailed information from suppliers about the fields/farms (history of the crop/farm, soil analysis, fertilizer applications, plant protection, harvests, culls, photos, etc.).
  • Quality control application: Tool to monitor quality control processes in accordance with established quality systems (e.g. ISO 22OOO, ISO 22OOO5, HACCP,) - complete data of fertilizer applications, pesticide applications, antibiotics, biochemical analyses of samples, photographs (pre-harvest/slaughter, post-harvest/slaughter, during packaging, and loading) and following quality assurance protocol in collaboration with analytical laboratories.
  • External traceability application: external traceability tool using the GS1 and EPCIS global standards. It covers all types of check-in and check-out events (departure, transport, arrival) from point to point in the supply chain. Support location tracking and real-time monitoring of the conditions of each shipment.
  • Internal Tracking Application: internal tracking tool at the processing plant level using GS1 and EPCIS global standards. Open architecture with interfaces to the production lines to create batches and labels based on sorting, weighing and recipes.
  • Nutritional Profiles implementation: Management of the nutritional characteristics of products. Supports all nutritional analysis and the creation of new profiles based on the specific characteristics of food ingredients and additives used based on and production process.
  • Application of Tags: Information selection tool for creating labels with interfaces for interfacing withlabel creation and printing programs.
  • Environmental Footprint application: Determination of the environmental footprint of each stage of product production, from planting/farming to standardization, to calculate the total environmental footprint of each producer/product before it enters the market.
  • Consumer Application: Rich information will be provided to consumers around the world about products from field/farm to shelf/table using TracelD or QR codes. This module will use GS1 Cloud services via application programming interfaces (APls). The detailed and accurate information provided on a specific product will focus on food safety issues, environmental issues (detailed process-based environmental footprint recording per product, recycling guidelines), nutritional information and good product preservation advice.

On the one hand, the provision of documented traceability services with full transparency down to the consumer and on the other hand, the creation of a framework to enhance the credibility of product quality will create benefits at different levels. Starting from the last point in the ready meals supply chain, the consumer, and going backwards, the expected benefits relate to building a product image at global level with a focus on transparency, quality and reliability of the information provided.
